German – Japanese Academia-Industry International Collaboration Program on Optics and Photonics

BMBF and JST will support joint research and development projects of industrial relevance and involving at least one research institute and one public/private company from Germany and Japan. The Joint Call text and submission process will soon be published on the JST and BMBF website.

The objects of funding shall be research and development projects close to implementation which involve multiple technologies.

Targeted research subtopics:

  • Optical metrology and sensing
  • Organic electronics
  • Photonics in manufacturing
  • Optical components and systems
  • Lighting


Funding Recipients shall be universities, research institutions and industrial companies based in Germany and in Japan. Eligible for funding are consortia composed of at least four partners (“2+2”), two of them on the Japanese side and two on the German side. For each country, these consortia should include at least one university or research institution and one company.

Budget for each project

German side: 200,000 Euro per year for 3 years
Japanese side: 18 million yen per year for 3 years


Period of the Call for Proposals: 1st September 2017 until 30th November 2017
Period of the Research: Around June 2018 to May 2021
