BMBF launches New Funding Initiative for Cooperation with Eastern Partnership and Central Asia

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) wants to further strengthen research cooperation with the countries of the Eastern Partnership and with Central Asia. A framework funding announcement has now been launched to promote closer ties in research cooperation.

Research cooperation between Germany and the countries of the Eastern Partnership (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine) and Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) has already increased significantly in recent years and will increase even more from 2022 onwards. The new funding initiative will support projects which intensify joint research and innovation activities with partners from the two regions and enable effective long-term networking to tap the cooperation potential.

The framework funding announcement forms the basis for specific calls that describe the concrete object of the funding and address one or more of the following modules in each case:

  • Module 1: Implementation of events and series of events organised by German research institutions
  • Module 2: International exploration and networking to establish new and expand existing collaborations
  • Module 3: Promotion of project-related mobility to link ongoing activities
  • Module 4: Preparation of joint applications by German research institutions and their partner institutions within the European Research Framework Programmes and other European research initiatives
  • Module 5: Promotion of joint research and development projects
  • Module 6: Promotion of international collaborative projects with mandatory participation of partner institutions from science and industry
  • Module 7: Promotion of partnerships in science, research and education
  • Module 8: Promotion of research and junior research groups as a starting point for sustainable, long-term cooperation
  • Module 9: Establishing sustainable joint partner structures

Applications can only be submitted within the context of a call for proposals. Applications will have to take into account, both the general conditions as outlined in the framework funding announcement and the specific requirements of the respective call for proposals.
